•Africa Cup of Nations

AFCON is the main international men's association football competition in Africa. It was sanctioned by Confederation of Africa Football ( CAF). and was held in 1957.

• The first tournament in 1957 there were only 3 participating nation's that is: Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia. South Africa was originally scheduled to join but was disqualified due to apartheid policies of the government in power.

• Since the tournament has expanded greatly Making it necessary to hold qualifying tournament. The number reached in the final was 16 in 1998. (16 teams were to compete in 1996 but Nigeria withdrew reducing the field to 15 ) also the same happened in 2010 whereby Togo withdrew from the tournament.

• On 20th July 2017 the AFCON was moved to June and expanded teams participating from 16 to 24. The format changed whereby 24teams are being drawn into 6groups of 4teams each with the top 2 teams of each group advancing to a'knock-out' stage.

Summary of AFCON.

1. Egypt is the most successful nation in AFCON history winning the tournament 7 times.

2. Egypt has most appearance in the tournament having appeared 25 times.

3. Egypt is the nation that have hosted the tournament most time compared to other Nations having hosted 5times.

4. The tournament held in 2019 was the one with many goals (109) compared to 1957 where just 8 goals where scored.

5. Cameroonian Samuel Eto holds the record of topscorer of the tournament having scored 18 goals in all matches he played.
